Control Yourself

I was two seconds away from making the title a Drake song.

We live in a big world and many people try to do things for the betterment of the entire world. While that goal is lofty, the effort is commendable. Now think about the impact you’ve had. How much good can you as a single person really do? This sounds bleak but what I want you to think about is your sphere of control. You may have a big boy job or sweet management position but can you really control your employees? Ok…yes but that is because those people value their jobs. If push came to shove that person could honestly just ignore you.

My point is: You can only control yourself and your actions, so focus on trying to be the best person you can be. You don’t have to be an asshole to that kid who is texting and walking super slow in front of you. You can deny yourself that doughnut that your co-worker rudely brought in (WHEN THEY KNOW YOU ARE TRYING TO LOSE WEIGHT BUT HAVE A WEAKNESS FOR GLAZE). You can choose to learn about cool topics or pick up a hobby. You do not have to shoot that guy that stepped on your new sneakers. God gave us free will but part of it is controlling yourself when pesky emotions and desires bubble up.

In a perfect world, people would strive to be the best individuals and that would naturally make the world a better place.

Unfortunately, that ain’t real. People not only allow themselves to be controlled but randomly lose control of themselves. “I’m sad, I’m gonna eat a gallon of ice cream.” Women not leaving men that are obviously trash. “Ooooh, I got some extra money and instead of saving it for bills…AMAZON HERE I COME!” Letting anger push you to do something 1. Out of character and/or 2. Illegal.

We’re so weak.

I won’t be naive and act like things happen that you can control. Uncontrollable is a word for a reason. If you haven’t noticed, I like thinking of examples. Here’s things you can do nothing about: Death, the past, being in love with Zooey Deschanel, and racism in people over 45. I’ll stop there. What you can do is accept that these random events will happen and then deal with them to the best of your ability. You can’t control everything but you can control you actions to them.

In the words of Drake, “Get that shit together.” That song is irrelevant but I like that line and that is two Drake references…Who am I becoming!?
